Ground Rules

Purpose

These ground rules are similar to those used in restorative justice circles and AVP (Alternatives to Violence) groups. I present the ground rules in the first class, review them in the second, and come back to them whenever there is a need. The purpose is to create an environment where people will feel safe enough to do the hard work of emotional self-examination.

Materials

  • Look for and affirm the good in everyone.
  • Don't put-down ourselves or others
  • Listen to what each person has to say.
    • Do not interrupt.
    • Share the floor with others
  • Observe Confidentiality
  • Everyone has a right to pass.

Procedure

We read the ground rules in class. We talk about each, and I ask the group for a commitment to follow them.
