Life Practices Handout

Life Practices

When the connection to the Core Self is strong, we empower ourselves to act from our wisdom and strength, rather than the “defensiveness” of our sub-personalities. When we are acting from our Core Self, we make decisions that empower us, and our lives work better. We can overcome the negativity, self-doubt and judgments of the ego that keep us stuck in our sub personalities.

We need to have a plan for how we will keep our connection to the core self strong, or we will get pulled into the drama of daily life. Everyone, even people who meditate an hour a day for 20 years, will get pulled into the negativity and judgments of the ego if they stop engaging in life practices that help them stay connected to the core self.

Here are some of the life practices that strengthen our connections to the Core Self. Many are things we’ve been practicing throughout the Emotional Awareness class:

  • Meditation
  • Prayer
  • Reading inspiring or spiritual material
  • Reading the Houses of Healing book
  • Journaling and writing
  • Inner child work
  • Seeing the light instead of the lampshade in others / forgiveness
  • Emotional Weather reports
  • Gratitude
  • Spending time in nature
  • Exercise
  • Healthy living - diet, sleep, etc.
  • Building a support network of positive people
  • Creative activities like art, music, photography, woodworking,
  • Develop new skills
  • Education
  • Religious practices
  • Volunteering/Service/ helping others
  • Support groups
  • Counseling
  • 12 step programs
  • NA/AA/Big book programs

If we make a commitment to healthy emotional and life practices, we will have a more positive attitude. We will be able to step back and not get pulled into the negativity, judgment and drama of every day life, and we will have the strength to overcome the stresses of life in ways that serve us better.
